Land-based Calamari - 17/05/2023

Post by Andrews » Fri May 19, 2023 7:57 pm

Hey everyone,

Flicking some squid jigs again this week, the squidding has been pretty slow despite the decent conditions!

Low run out tide, super clear water with an okay amount of floating weed.
Evening, dusk, dark
Maybe 1M max depth?
Red jig, fast action, all squid off the bottom.
Six total in 2 hours.

Loving this new reel, super light and killer.

Cheers Lightningx, Yeah I'm really digging the upgraded reel. Super smooth, lighter and the higher gear ratio makes for a nicer fast action.

Thanks Sebb, yeah!
Run out tide bottoming towards the slack low, three of the squid were take in maybe 2ft of water directly below the pier.
Just saw them both times picking off some baitfish.

Thing I did notice was that despite the lower tide, the squid didn't sit over the weed beds. Rather only over the sandy bottom / deeper holes.

Good info. That means in shallow water they prefer depth than weed cover. :tu:

Yeah absolute, they'd only have 30cm max depth over the eel grass on the lower tides so it'd make sense!
These N wind have made for dirty water for about two weeks now, no squid unfortunately!

Going to find out if northerlies make for dirty water on the other side of the bay (Mordi / Beaumaris).
Didn't rain much today, at least that's a plus!
