Bellarine - Calamari before the spawn - 1 March 2025

Post by Andrews » Sun Mar 02, 2025 2:00 pm

Hey all,

Hope we're having a good week.
Punched out again for my weekly seafood run locally!

Location and Conditons:
Bellarine, Saturday 1 March 2025, 7.00am - 10.00am.
Light to gusty winds blowing W.
Run out low tide.

Experience
As the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, we embarked on a challenge to hunt down the elusive calamari.

Recently, these cephalopods have been playing hard to get, making this morning's fishing session all the more enjoyable.

The strategy hinged on taking advantage of the morning light conditions and venturing further along the coast. Here, the underwater terrain is an ideal hunting ground for calamari, featuring a mix of soft sandy bottoms edged with dense eel grass beds, and patchy intermediate ground.

Success in these prime fishing spots demands precision. Targeted casting is key, with well-placed casts into the edge of the eel grass banks or patchy holes a proven successful technique. It's these strategic casts that often hit the jackpot, reeling in those prized calamari.

Persistence paid off as we managed to land four calamari, with three of them caught over the same small, thick eel grass patch. It was a rewarding experience, underscoring the importance of patience and technique.

As we move into March, anglers can look forward to the first local calamari spawn of the 2025 year.

This period promises increased numbers, a more aggressive bite, and larger calamari, making it an exciting time to be out on the water!

Cheers mates!
Yeah I've always found that St Leonards always get the bigger ones about a month earlier than Curlewis!
Positive hearing they're around - I'm doing the same, while using up the bait as it comes. Was slow on the whiting Saturday.

Great write up mate, I enjoyed it. I am waiting on a plane to disembark from the Gold Coast - will be back out at CS chasing the squid soon
