St Leonards Report 15/09/19 Squid

Post by soulstar » Mon Sep 16, 2019 12:55 pm

Hello fellow fisherman,

Reporting the night out squiding on st leonards pier on Sunday morning with Snook! :ch:

Arrived at 1:30am, 10 or less others already on the pier but we’re leaving as I geared up at the car park! One duo said little caught if anything - x1 squid and a grass whiting.

Set up gear and had the following:
x 3 floats with whiting on spikes (different lengths)
X 5 rods with hooks - squid and blue bait used
X 3 rods for jigs! (2.5 models)

Well winds were above average in strength (moderate) and was wet raining 2mm throughout the night! We continued to brave the storm that might be the secret recipe to catch a squid or big snapper and had driven 1.5 hours For that chance!

The lesson: persistence pays its dividends!

Had one hook up on my hook rod, gave me 2 to 3 runs before it snapped off and I landed a doughnut! I’d say I had a pinkie on or a flat head. Had small bites through out and considered whether crabs or usual leather jackets were eating the bait.
When I was on, I made sure to keep the tension tight and reel but still lost it thinking it may not have hooked up at the mouth!

By 4am or so, we landed 2 Large squid, and lost a 3rd from another member of our team (in training)

Still the catch was enough to inspire us to stay out until 8:30am before the winds picked up and we retreated!

The winds went NNE So was hard to fish our usual spot facing the city of Melbourne! Still, it was a great night! Snook and I were talking about our next adventures for the future and who knows....the more we get out there, the higher chance we will report how we bagged out on a pier as opposed to a boat!

Till then! :wt:

Soulstar (and Snook & Co)

There are only two fishing reports I look forward to

I have a high admiration for Adrian's reports , , , , and a high level of envy for yours and Snook's. You guys rock

That is my type of fishing, Don & I love, and would have loved to have caught up with you guys if we were in Victoria, but the 700 kms distance from South Oz makes that hard.

We would have loved to have turned up with our Jetty Karts to compliment you guys, PLUS you guys have an Italian Coffee Machine :nw:
