St Leonard's Pier Report 9/07/2020

Post by Andrews » Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:17 am

Hey Everyone,

Three weeks of ripper fishing amongst the cold wet days, I can't get enough of these beauties!
The pier has been providing mixed results, while the squid are lower in numbers the plentiful garfish made more than made up for their absence.
Crystal clear had made for some ripper leather jackets being sight casted on the high tide.

26/6/2020, Overcast afternoon with light winds on a high clarity rising tide.
The minute the tuna oil hit the water a the garfish came running in and went wild, the larger fish were cruising 1m+ deep while the smaller fish were chilling 1- 2 ft off the bottom. The school of 30+ cruised back and forth the whole trip and the fine splashes of the burley hitting the water perked them up leading to a solid chunky 10 caught.

28/6/2020, Sunny/Partly cloudy afternoon with light N winds on a high clarity rising tide.
Plenty of action, the big school came back with a large amount of gars sitting at the bottom and amongst the weed. Sight casted a nice squid hiding amongst the weed hunting the smaller garfish with a pilchard coloured jig. Thumper!

8/7/2020, Sunny afternoon with light NE/SE winds on a high clarity rising tide.
The fish were less active and smaller, fished for an two hours and caught five smaller gars. Redeeming cast had this nice little squid following the jig before making a fatal strike! I really like this photo!
