St Leonards Juvenile Calamari 20/01/2020

Post by Andrews » Fri Jan 29, 2021 8:31 pm

Hey Everyone,

Quick update from St Leonards from the past few days, there has been a spawn of hundreds of calamari that have moved into the pier and in a few months there should be some incredible squid fishing.

I took these photos and video of Jan 20/01/2021, completely unedited. Check out the clarity and colour!

Removed the audio, bunch of kids enjoying the weather jumping off the pier.

You're right about that, big school of pinkies 30cm-45cm came into the pier this-morning, caught three ~38cm and plenty more undersize before the wind picked up and they slowed down.

All the pinkies caught were between the concrete and the 3rd wood pylon, anything along the section running along the pier didn't see much action. Water was murky with a clarity of 1m, pilchard being the preferred bait. Light burley with crushed pilchards. No squid seen being caught.

Was there last weekend, got bag limit of big king George and 5 nice pinkies 4 of which was between 36cm- 39cm and 1 at 51cm. Got couple pikes and smashed a few nice trevalys when thier school came around. Was fun untill tide stoped moving so we left. Also got plenty yakkas too as always, gonna be snapper bait soon.

That's awesome! Today was super quiet, managed one squid in a few hours and didn't see any apart from a single trevally caught. Looks like they might have maybe moved on. There were some Salmon moving around the pier, but we uninterested in baits. Two large pods of dolphins came within 50m chasing the schools.
