St Leonard's Calamari 5/02/2021

Post by Andrews » Fri Feb 05, 2021 5:57 pm

Hey Everyone,

Quick update on the fishing @ St Leonards Pier Land-based.

Calamari remain very quiet, speaking to a few friends with kayaks and boats and they're struggling too. Big spawn of juveniles should hopefully fix that in the coming months. Managed only two this week, one caught on Sunday and the other Wednesday. Very little new ink on the pier, plenty of people fishing with little success.

Whiting are holding strong at night with the sandy holes productively holding good fish, pipis and mussels are looking to be the best baits. Managed a dozen fish this week at first dusk.

Snapper are quiet right now, they're out deeper and yet to head into the pier despite these strong winds. Saturday a big school of pinkies came in sitting on the sandy bottom, managed to bag out with fish between 30-40cm. North winds should hopefully fire them up.

Few photos of the week.

Good to see some bigger specimens around already.:tu:
Usually heaps of the micro sized squid this time of year.

Cheers Seb, yeah really nice seeing them getting more active.
There aren't many, and they're not traveling in numbers but they're still nice.

Thanks Lightningx!
Ripper sesh Saturday, hoped to repeat that today but couldn't even manage a single bite despite the north winds. Water was still crystal clear.
Might sneak down after lunch tomorrow for a flick.

I was there last night, got few whiting, released countless undersized pinkies and bagged out on makerel. Saw few nice squid landed and some lucky fisho landed a 2kg snapper. Water is not very clear, couldn't see the bottom.

It's amazing how much of a difference a few hours of a slight W wind makes, super clear today, easily seeing the bottom.
That is awesome, I fished 9-12 today and yeah didn't see anything caught.

Hopefully the squid fire up tomorrow.

Hey Daz,

I have the Gomexus reel stand in the 42mm version, there are two models the 42mm (rounded bottom) and the 48mm (glow stick) which is larger and has a space for a glowstick, they also come in a range of colours and sizes 42MM (red, black, silver, gold and smoke), 48MM (red, silver and smoke) and are made of aluminium. Both sizes should fit the reel, there is also a list of the correct reels in the item description.

They are on sale right now for $13 AUD free postage. After I saw this to type this out I decided to get the 48mm as a spare. haha!
