Land Based Calamari Action! + Sponsorship Announcement!
Hey everyone!
I wanted to share an update and a few highlights from the past week of fishing land-based @ St Leonards.
You might have noticed but I've been moving towards more short videos + photos for greater engagement on Instagram.
The fishing has been tough the past week, majority of the calamari are still pretty small, while some larger ones around but mainly sticking to that deeper water and the shallows on a strong wind/dropping tide. In a month or two they'll be a lot better and more consistent!
MASSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT:
I'm pretty excited to announce that I've been sponsored by EjTodd and Yamashita Australia! I'm pretty proud to be announcing this as I started my Instagram as a fun wholesome personal project for me to share photos and advice and it's growing into something greater! Massive thank you to everyone who's supported me on Instagram and FishingVictoria! More calamari and ripper sessions to come!
Sweet care package they sent me, jigs are form the Chinese New Year, 2018 Dog, 2019 Pig and 2020 Rat!
They're too good to use so I'll be keeping them in mint condition!
Wednesday 24/02/2021 - Light winds, sunny evening, clear water on the dropping run out.
Squid were very tough, no-one was really catching anything this week and the one thing I've noticed is that all the squid I've caught in the past fortnight, preferred a brighter coloured jig over the naturals despite the clear water.
I started on the orange Yamashita with the rattle and within three casts two smaller squid followed the jig. After a few rises and drops one grabbed the jig, I landed him and the second wanted in on the action! Two smaller squids which I gave away to the young family next to me. I decided to hit the shallows and casted into the wind, let the jig sink and then used a tip and run method across the eel grass! This brought this nice squid to chase it and strike right above the sandy bottom!

Thursday 25/02/2021 - Strong winds, overcast cool day, clear wind on a low low tide.
What a contrast between the past few days of weather, this made for tough conditions!
The strong W wind pushed me to casting the outside edge of the pier and within three casts of the orange squid, we were one!

Hey, maybe not the biggest squid but I pulled one more from that side before moving over to that section that did me solid yesterday!
First cast, a smaller squid came, grabbed the jig and was landed! Seeing as it was a little quiet there and I swore I saw another slightly bigger one that was spooked, I decided to give it five minutes before trying the spot again! Your first cast is your most important one!
Five minute later and this happens!

Shame about knocking the go pro!
You know I've got to give this squid the Instagram treatment!
