Hey everyone,
I wanted to provide a quick update on the squid situation from the St Leonards Pier.
Last update was from mid Dec 2021 and saw large numbers of calamari, with many being full of eggs.
Since then the pier has been crazy busy with the holidays and fishing quality has decreased dramatically. It's been a real struggle between the lack of squid and the strong east winds.
8/1/2022
Sunny morning, light winds, run in tide, clear water.
Fished 7am-9am, managed only two calamari - didn't see any others caught.
9/1/2021
Sunny evening, moderate winds, run out, clear tide.
Caught one, didn't see anything else caught. Very quiet.
Andrew
It's been E winds all week and the water is brown, may try again next week before Australia Day.
Cheers,
Andrew

Does the East wind make the water murky more than rain?
I think we're getting more rain the next couple days, but the wind will turn west southwest.

100% does, if we get one day of E or NE winds over 30km, within the 24 hours the water is muddy brown.
It's just so exposed, another way to tell is when the Indented Heads boat-ramp cam is covered in salt https://www.boating.vic.gov.au/ramps/a157F000001P6QVQA0
This is the best cam for St Leonards not just because the St L boat ramp cam is broken, but because you've got the exposed reef to the right and sandy bottom ahead which is a great way to determine the clarity.
Winds are staying E till Friday morn before turning NE. The wind should move W by Saturday morning and continue until turning S Saturday right.
Rain shouldn't really affect it as long as it doesn't bring strong winds.
I am thinking that by Sunday night it should be cleaner, if anything a little milky.

Yeah! Hope to pick up the rest in a few days once things clear, chasing some salmon this weekend.
