Clifton Springs Five Calamari - 12 October 2024

Post by Andrews » Sat Oct 19, 2024 3:26 pm

Hey all,

Met up with a local kayak fishing group and hit the water chasing was on the bite. Had 7 on the water with decent success.

Location and Timing:

Clifton Springs drifting over eel grass beds and patchy ground around the 2-3m depth and was on the water 8.00 - 11.00pm for the morning which coinsided with the run-in tidal movement / slack.

Squid Jig Selection:
The selection of a gold foil natural pattern squid jig was made to take advantage of the warm setting sun, bright reflection and to imitate the King George Whiting.

Experience
The calamari was challenging and the bite was very slow. All takes were on the drift with long pauses. Four of the five calamari were with eggs, explaining the slower bite. This suggests that the largest spawn of the year over spring/summer is approaching and that they bite may be slow for a few more weeks.
