Coliban River 30/5/20

Got out yesterday for a fish with a mate and we decided to work our way down the Coliban River between Upper Coliban and Lauriston Reservoirs. The river was flowing, baitfish were jumping and the sun was shining but while some spots looked likely, we didn't register a single bite. We fished a variety of techniques including worms on the bottom, under a float and cast unweighted as well as casting and retrieving a variety of Z-Man grubz. Several of these lures were, of course, lost to snags.

We then gave the Upper Coliban itself a go but found it incredibly windy and also devoid of fish and packed up after an hour. We headed down to a spot on the river between Lauriston and Malmsbury and while my mate registered 2 or 3 bites, we didn't get onto anything. We saw a couple of fish jump and a water rat swimming laps of the pool. This is the first time I've struck out in both the river and the reservoir in the same day.

As an aside, the scrubbies we bought from a particular servo were limp and mostly dead out of the box. Very disappointing for what we paid for them ($13). I wouldn't say they were the only reason we didn't catch fish but I will say if you plan on fishing the Kyneton area it would be best to purchase your bait from the BP just outside Carlsruhe or the home brew store in Sunbury.

I used to fish upper Coliban quiet successfully a few years back, there was some quality trout around. I have only once tried fishing the Coliban river with no luck. The river looked beautiful and very promising but there was no sign of life. Has anyone had any success there?

Good on you for giving it a crack mate.
Sounds like you gave it a good go but it was just one of those days.
Thanks for the report.
Cheers 👍🏻

Even without fish its great to get out and fish again, plus I didn't know the BP at Carlsrue sells bait; thanks for the news. I saw that the Upper Coliban has had 20,000 Rainbows stocked recently, so there will be a wall of people there soon. I use to fish a hell of a lot where the Coliban river runs into the Lauriston, but I gave up because of the Roach.

Edit: 12,500 Yellowbelly fingerlings went in in April too.

I had a crack at fly fishing the coliban river below Trentham falls for the first time today, I didn’t sight any fish though. There wasn’t as much water flow as I was expecting. Nice stretch of river (stream) to walk on a fresh morning anyway.

I fished lauriston near the dam wall for a sum total of zero fish from zero bites. Tried powerbait, worms and a variety of lures. A few other people were nearby and they were equally busy. The guys on the hobies may have done better but I didn’t see them come back in.
And it was chilly. Brrrrrr.

Bloody cold up there at this time of year. I was at Lauriston on Tuesday with a mate for the same result as you. I got a few bites at the Upper Coliban but no hook-ups unfortunately.
