Barwon river reddies

Post by happyfriggincamper » Thu Jul 30, 2020 4:50 pm

Got the opportunity to get out and have a fish close to home - so decided to hit the Barwon river with the yak for the first time since moving to geelong a few months ago.

Good weather and a little wind - the main plan was just to get out, do some sounding, get a bit more familiar with sidescan, the river in general, troll some hardbodies while doing so and not expect anything.

Sounded up a few fish and schools over 2hrs and two marks ended up producing reddies. First one measured by the eye as around the mid 20's mark and the next in the mid 30's. Considered keeping the bigger for dinner - as I've never had redfin but threw it back.

Both taken on a stump jumper imitation in about 3m of water - hope to get out again in the coming weeks.

What's the best way to cook them? Can you pan fry them skin on like trout?

You made a mistake throwing back, they are the best eating freshwater fish IMO.
The skin is like armourplate, don,t attempt to scale, it,s a waste of time.
Fillet like any perch or bream then take skin off, it,s not difficult and you will be rewarded
with the sweetest fish you will eat.

Lord, allow me to catch a fish, so large that even I,when speaking of it afterwards.........May have no need to lie !!!
