Ya gotta laugh

Post by Yota » Fri Feb 07, 2020 6:37 pm

So the great white hunter went to catch a tuna today.
Launched Queenscliff and the car park was chockas, I don't know, a lot of sickies today ? I had planned an RDO since watching the weather last week.
As soon as I got outside the heads and realised the swell was rockin from the SW I knew I was in for an experience.
There was dozens and dozens of boats everywhere on the way out at 7am.
I dragged a skirt and a bibless hardbody down to Lorne and back zig zagging from 30-60 meters watching the sounder the whole way. DONUTS.
I followed the grey birds here and there, they weren't working on anything. I think they are turns ?
With the 3 meter swell ( and the frequent bigger swell for good measure ) I was turning green so when I hit Lorne i returned back inside the bay. So a good 3 hours trolling.
On the way back I can honestly say I could count the boats I saw on one hand. Either they went somewhere else or headed home like me.
Then I had the almost 2 hour drive back home.
This is the part where you guess and I own up to that I know squat about tuna fishing, but I gave it a go.
I'm sure I learned something,,,
If anyone has any tips feel free to add.
One thing, can anyone show an image or a link to the type of tackle that is meant to connect the skirt leader to the main line please. I had a swivel and clip but the clip didn't sit right on the plastic ring thingy on the skirt leader - in my opinion. I tried searching online but only found examples of people making the actual skirt attach to the head.

Should've got a bag of KGW between Q and SL instead; much better tablefare than tuna anyway...

Yeah I hear you, we are lucky enough to get a good feed in the bay year round.
I'd try the tuna once at least.
If I wasn't so green after the trip today I would have gone for some squid

Yota gave it a crack - that's the important thing :tu:

You never know if you never go - at least you will be much wiser for the next trip.

Good on you for sharing the experience so we can learn from it too :gj:

ok so found out it was a TLD 30 and 70 % of the line was gone in the first run.. my mate said it brough back memories from a trip few years ago hahahaha
we have been in this exact situation (on seperate occasions) before in one of the (same) members boats here and ended up loosing the fish at the boat due to pure stupidity and inexperience, so possibly could have been a barrel :(
