Portland Lee Breakwater rockwall

Post by Sebb » Sun Mar 13, 2022 8:48 pm

Went to Portland with mates. They don't really fish but sorta happy just to chill. The 10yo boy is always keen.
Stopped by Compleat Angler Portland and asked what's biting. Tuna offshore, kingfish already slowed down. Squid around the pontoons and mixed bag from pinkke to whiting and sharks at night from the lee rockwall.

Fished 1.5hr just before sunset. Few people. I set 2 rods, a 9ft 9kg rod, 3000 reel with 15lb line, set with 5/0 circle running sinker rig, whole squid head and guts. The other one is 9ft6 7kg with 15lb line paternoster and flasher 4/0 KL hook, half pilchard and chicken. Burley pellets.

15mins in, got few taps, then the rod with the whole squid head on 5/0 circle, buckled. Thought it would be a nice pinkie. But it was 38.5cm kgw. Still thinking how did it get hooked.
After that, then I set my 7ft rod with 2500 reel, 10lb line, #2 baitholder hook. Put some of the squid guts. Few enquires, landed another two kgw 37-38cm.

Saw a guy pulled a big banjo, another guy pulled an undersized pinkie. And a lady with her son pulled a wrasse. Otherwise, pretty quiet.

Sounds like a great way to spend an arvo/evening
kgw on 5/0 is impressive, goes to show you never know what can turn up but if you dont have a hook in the water you miss out

Thanks for the report and great preparation of the whiting sebb!

Pity to hear the kings have slowed down as I have been too busy to go and try catch one before now!
