Post by wolfwright » Mon Jan 06, 2014 4:56 pm

Hey guys this is my first post here. Im heading down to Marengo just past Apollo Bay for the week from sunday 12th just wondering what fish are biting at the moment and if theres any advice you can give me as I haven't done too much surf fishing before.

Friend in Apollo bay says squid from the break wall. I've got salmon of the beach and bream in the river there. If you feel like a drive try johanna beech our the aire river.

If you staying at the cabins near the beach try fishing off the rocks there. There is trevally, whiting, salmon and mullet there. I normally use squid strips for bait. Marengo beach is always worth throwing some lures around to catch salmon. As for calamari try Apollo bay harbour, there's some monster calamari in there. Make sure to take a landing net with you.

Apollo bay harbour fishes well for squid, try the small jetty at the boat ramp and all along the breakwall on both sides, get snook, leather jackets, morwong in the harbour. Like enver said the rocks fish well at below the holiday park, and part of the beach is sheltered , long whiting rods do the job off the beach for all species down near Marengo.

Depends what type of sabiki rod, bought one on eBay just to use at wooleys pier in westernport, not the best, it's a one piece and to stiff for weak mouth of a yakka or trevally. The sabiki rigs would work well in the harbour for trevally or slimeys, not really good to cast, so works best on piers up and down with burley.

Just out of interest can i use a sabiki rig on my 7ft 3kg outfit or do i need a specific thing?

I bought a couple a while back and haven't got around to trying them yet, maybe in the next few days.
