Crabbing on Grange Jetty 24-01-2019

A scorching hot night so took the kids to Grange for an ice-cream and while we were there, a trip to the Jetty was in order.

Although it wasn't us that were doing the crabbing, a gander at what was being caught is what this report is about. About 10:30 pm, which was halfway to low tide, which wasn't ideal. Normally a high tide on night fall or sun up are the best times. Most Metro Jetties are producing this time of year but the picks would be Grange & Semaphore Jetties.

The night fall crowd seemed to do better from what was being bantered. There were two groups from the afternoon, who didn't allow me to take a photo, which was OK, they were nice people but chose not to. One group had about 10, the other group about 20.

These are the photos of the evening crowd. Oddly enough, only one group had their crabs on ice (with the day time temp at almost 47 degrees and the night time min about 24 degrees) Some nice crabs and nice to see some Sandies, which normally show up about March April when the weather is colder.

This time of year, you can spotlight crabs up in the shallows, even on suburban beaches. My Nephew and his mate plucked 24 crabs spotlighting near here, two nights ago.
Here is one person at Grange Beach, where earlier in the evening it was swarming with people swimming.

Not bad at all... I grew up in SA and when I lived there used to do a lot of dabbing for blue swimmers... was great fun and used to get plenty :)

Thanks guys, was nice to see all manner of people out catching them , , , , there were two all girl crews, which was good. But I was just walking and looking, so no Blue Swimmer Crabs for me.

Yeah, sorry Kimtown, Lightningx is right , , , , South Australia

Maybe crumpet_avenger knows something. Is that in Vic in an undisclosed location only for fellow Team Crumpets ????

No secret spot. Westernport.
They are called sandcrabs for a reason. Follow the sand and you find the crabs.
Took me 15 goes to find my favourite crabbing spot. Also get some thumping flatties in the same.place. my GPS mark says sandcrab and flatty.
Bottom end of the port is full of them.during winter

Well done. The 15 goes is what it's all about. Try and try again, till you find them.

Here in SA, we get those and heaps of Blueys. Not a lot of Flatties in SA like Vic but those willing get them in the crab raking areas, either by boat in the shallows or by shore wading. Some by boat at spots they keep to themselves, which is cool as they are prized and spots fleeced if you let the cat out of the bag.
