Dunsborough fishing trip

Post by Matty H » Wed Oct 31, 2018 7:24 pm

Just back from a sensational fishing trip to SW WA with the 2 bro in laws. He took his 4.75 quinnie bowrider down. Got there Wednesday arvo, shopped n set up, staying at the "beach house". Out next day starting in close off Eagle Bay for some wrasse....., we were chasing pinkies n kg whiting, before heading deeper to 21m. Immediately bites, abundant sand whiting n the odd squid. Stuck a whiting on live, couple minutes later zzzzzzzzzz....!! It takes off for a big gummy who came on board. Conditions started to get lumpy and time to head in. Steak sandwiches round the fire for dinner with plenty of hydration and a relatively early night.

Very nice, I have a lot of great memories of Eagle bay back in the days I was spearfishing, fantastic place for a fishing trip, it's a well known area for big blue groper and bloody big white pointers, I remember always looking over my shoulder out there. I'll be heading that way in the new year starting at Esperance and working my way along the coast, if you ever get a chance try Cape Rich east a Albany.

Rest of trip story now I can get round to it. Fire in pics worked a treat, so Thursday night disappeared! Friday real windy, so towed the boat down to Augusta to fish the river. Very low tide made fishing difficult, with a couple of small trevally, undersized kg whiting and bust offs from big rays. Water looked extremely fishy however. Stopped in at a few of the local quality wineries on the way home, including Leeuwin estate, mmmmm!
Saturday forecast was much better, so we headed out to a similar spot as the first day, caught a small trevally who went on live, and bang!, on, big runs n head shakes, finally up comes a huge gummy! Too big for the net, tried to tail it in, too thick to grab, and then disaster..... It took off dragging leader through my hand to braid, which started to cut into me, had to let go, and over the side goes my best rod n reel! It's still out there off eagle bay folks, being towed around by a monster gummy........ Anyway, after this my bro in law also picked up a nice gummy (pics above). I had to be satisfied with a beautiful day on the water checking out the dozens of whales passing by - quite amazing. Pub that night for dinner and some vigorous hydrating.....!
Sunday was another great day on the water, best weather of the trip, fished all the way down to bunker bay and back again. Bunker bay looks incredibly fishy, should produce whiting, but we could only pull wrasse and similar reef species. Got a couple of decent pinkies and a few squid back towards Dunsborough but a quieter day fish wise. Fish for dinner before clean up/pack up next day and back to Perth. That night hit the casino....., very long night, and came out ahead (amazing).
We're all now invested in planning the next trip! Will try and stick a few more pics up too, without repeats...

Hmmmmmmm., not got that quite right yet have I......
One brother in law lives in Perth, the other two of us flew over. Had to resuscitate a guy on the plane on the way!
Saw a whale fully clear the water whilst breaching as a highlight. Dunsborough is a thriving and vibrant little coastal town, well worth a visit.
