WELCOMING A REVITALISED AND SAFER RYE PIER
WELCOMING A REVITALISED AND SAFER RYE PIER
Friday, 28 October 2022
Works to improve safety and accessibility at one of the Mornington Peninsula’s most popular landmarks will be completed in time for summer.
Funded as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $24 million Piers and Jetties Stimulus Package, the $2.1 million upgrade has delivered a safer and more accessible pier approach after a busy six months of works.
The new 309 metre deck is now 4.2 metres wide and built from Australian hardwood timber, chosen to preserve the historical importance of the pier.
Crews have been busy on site installing a new all-abilities access ramp, safety railings and upgraded solar lighting.
Two new ladders will also be installed as part of the works at this popular diving and snorkelling site. To enhance the underwater experience for pier visitors and the local community, several original timber piles, home to a host of unique marine life, have been retained.
As part of the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Rye foreshore redevelopment, salvaged pier timbers will be incorporated into landscaping elements, providing a connection to the past and enhancing the visitor experience.
Other projects completed under the Piers and Jetties Stimulus Package include upgrades to several piers in Port Phillip, including Queenscliff South Pier, Portarlington Pier and Middle Brighton Pier.
The Labor Government announced funding in the Victorian Budget 2022/23 to complete the reconstruction of the full pier, including the pier head. Further announcements on these works are expected in coming months.

“Piers and jetties are a popular feature of the Mornington Peninsula, for local enjoyment as well as the area’s great tourism experience. Investing in assets like Rye Pier provides benefits for our community and local businesses.”
