Travel Rods and Fishing tackle on aeroplanes.

Post by rb85 » Thu May 31, 2018 9:22 pm

There would be a few people who have taken fishing rods on aeroplanes interstate or overseas. Have been considering purchasing a few travel rods.

Anyone here got any experience traveling with fishing rods.

No experience with actually doing it..... but I did look into the costs of doing it and decided it was cheaper to take a reel and buy an average rod at location.

Depends on the type of fishing and the quality of gear you are going to be using.......

Most people recommended sending 2pc rod's via post/freight as opposed to taking on the plane as it works out a fair bit cheaper.

3 piece rods can be taken as carry on or checked in baggage.
Reels very much the same.
Lures or anything with hooks needs to be checked in
Some airlines will not even permit braid on the reel (if its carry on, checked in is fine) So best to check the airline you plan to fly with.

Carry on max length is usually around 1m. Checked in it's usually around 2.5m. You will have to pay extra for over sized luggage. Usually no more than $30

I use pvc pipe with a screw top. drill two holes so you can get a lock through the scew top and pipe to lock it. also put foam at the base and top of the rod tube and wrap your rods in a sheet to keep it from banging around.

Cheers, Anth

A a fisherman that travels internationally very frequently I have had mixed issues with taking fishing rods. All other tackle as long as it is in your checked in baggage (not your cabin bag) has never been a problem as has 3-piece rods. Different airports have different security standards though and that is where problems occur. For example I was able to carry 2 light 2-piece rods from Sydney to Dubai in the cabin and then airport security would not let me take them on the Dubai to Lagos flight - the moral of that story is take cheap rods! I have had a couple of similar experiences. A suitable piece of PVC tubing with end caps with the rods inside can be checked in and no issues.

The pvc piping idea doesn’t sound too bad.
Might give that a go next time.
Cheers

Also if your going up north there are greater size and weight restrictions on the smaller planes such as Rex air. I like 1 piece rod for home and for travel bought a few 4 piece rods. Some 3 piece rod do not fit in my check in bag and I do not want to risk carry on. So I just use a pvc tube in the center of my luggage bag. You can even roll the pieces in a tee shirt then into the tube.

Amazing quality travel rods are available now, even for heavy popping. They pack quite small (3 to 5 piece) and often come in a solid tube, easy to check in as hold luggage. I have two Shimano Beastmaster rods which are 5-piece 11 ft length, and pack both them in their bag in a single tube in my suitcase
