interesting article: Fishing Survery

RECREATIONAL fishing created more than $7 billion worth of economic activity in Victoria in 2013-14, according to a new study.

The study, by Ernst & Young, was paid for by the Recreational Fishing Licence trust fund, and commissioned by Victorian recreational fishing peak body VRFish.

It found that 838,000 Victorian adults “participated” in the recreational fishing: an industry that supported almost 34,000 full time jobs.

According to the report, that was an increase from 721,000 recreational fishers in 2009.

The report found that “for every dollar spent on fishing, the average fisher generated $1.22 in benefits, or a net gain of $0.22”.

“The net present value of the recreational fishing industry over the 20 year period is $91.2 billion output, $50.8 billion value added,” the report said.

“Average annual employment over the period is 39,994 FTE jobs.”

The findings have been welcomed by VRFish General Manager Dallas D’Silva.

“The report is the only one of its kind in Victoria able to provide a benchmark on the level of participation and economic activity generated by recreational fishing,” Mr D’Silva said.

Doesnt seem right. Thats more than 8 grand attached to each angler and one person fully employed for every 21 anglers.

just found the article in the Weekly Times, gotta agree on the numbers all a bit unrealistic. looking at the numbers below - this would suggest that 1 full-time job is created by every 24 fishers - we all spend varying amounts, hope no one is relying on my expenditure for their pay each week!

It found that 838,000 Victorian adults “participated” in the recreational fishing: an industry that supported almost 34,000 full time jobs.

That seems plausible given some blokes spend 6 figures on a boat.

Without comparing it to other pastimes or industries the numbers are pretty meaningless though.

It's a bit hard to tell what's what without knowing the scope of the study'

I would think between the 7 of us that went to bonnie doon on the weekend we would have spent close to $1k on fuel and accommodation alone.

I would be interested to read the actual study if anyone can find it.

I think this is the whole point of a study like this, it's the associated extra cost that are attributed to rec fishing and why as a pastime it needs to be grown and properly funded so its benefits are far reaching

Or they just got some big 4 accounting firm to rubber stamp some numbers which were provided to them. At the end of the day it is a good thing that more is spent on facilities that help the recreational fisho.
