RECREATIONAL fishing created more than $7 billion worth of economic activity in Victoria in 2013-14, according to a new study.
The study, by Ernst & Young, was paid for by the Recreational Fishing Licence trust fund, and commissioned by Victorian recreational fishing peak body VRFish.
It found that 838,000 Victorian adults “participated” in the recreational fishing: an industry that supported almost 34,000 full time jobs.
According to the report, that was an increase from 721,000 recreational fishers in 2009.
The report found that “for every dollar spent on fishing, the average fisher generated $1.22 in benefits, or a net gain of $0.22”.
“The net present value of the recreational fishing industry over the 20 year period is $91.2 billion output, $50.8 billion value added,” the report said.
“Average annual employment over the period is 39,994 FTE jobs.”
The findings have been welcomed by VRFish General Manager Dallas D’Silva.
“The report is the only one of its kind in Victoria able to provide a benchmark on the level of participation and economic activity generated by recreational fishing,” Mr D’Silva said.
