Finding Mullet/Gar

Post by Triggz » Sat May 23, 2015 5:57 pm

Evening guys,

Just wondering if there are any easy locations anywhere around the bay or Werribee/Geelong area that the Mrs and I can find some mullet or gar tonight. We would be land based but happy to drive around a bit if necessary.

Just want to stock up on some fresh bait to snap freeze.

Cheers guys. Have read the chicken thing a fair bit, is it honestly the best bait? I've always thrown cast nets but obviously can't do that here.

I've found sabiki rigs work well for catching mullet.

Yes mate, raw chicken works a treat! Use a few loaves of old bread for burley, and mix it with a heap of water, and a dash of tuna oil. Mix it up real well until all chunks of bread turn into crumbs. Throw it out into the water sparingly, until the fish eventually find you...and you will have a ball. They're a school fish, so if you get one, there will be others there. Bait collection can be just as much fun as catching the target fish sometimes...
Cast nets are awesome, but we have too many irresponsible dip-***** in Melbourne who would try using them to catch fish instead of just bait, instead of using a rod and reel. That's why they're illegal down here. It's a shame...

Thanks for all the tips guys. Didn't end up going tonight but might head to a few jetty's in the morning.

Yeah it's always a handful that ruin it for the masses. I was always spoilt for mullet... Find a school, throw the net, have 5-15 livies for the day.

Where is the warmies/how do I get there? Same for docklands, I don't really know where to go to fish there. Don't know the area well at all. If anyone could help with this that would be awesome.
