Hey everyone, thought I'd see if this is normal, my backyard is rock hard dry ground and ive never been able to find worms, not even in our compost for some reason, anyway during a few hot days above 35 my lawn almost completely died and turned into very hard dry ground as it always does in summer, i was about to head to the tackle shop to get worms and my wife said that theres heaps in the compost, i didn't belive her because i watched my dog bury a bone in there a few days before, i checked anyway and was absolutely blown away with what i found! Why has this happened in 2 days when its never ever had worms?

With the rain we have had, I'm surprised
Normally compost heaps are great for worms.
My lawns are green and growing in front of my eyes
I mowed them 2 weeks ago & it'll take me 2 hours this time
Cheers Gra

This was a few weeks ago, since then we have had some rain and im mowing once a week again and most worms have gone now, i come home after fishing and put whatever worms i have in the compost but they bugger off real quick. In this situation i guess it must of been to dry for them everywhere else so they all moved to the only place with moisture. Im not sure how worms work so thats all i could think of.

Interesting. I do the same too with the leftover worms after fishing.
Sometimes they're there and sometimes no.

Compost worms require moisture to survive, I'd say with everything so dry the worms would have been buried deep but with the rain they have come up. You probably always had them but you couldn't see them, keep it moist but not wet and start adding some veggie scraps and cover the compost you will have an unending supply of worms

They actually require an environment in which they can survive, just throwing them in will just either kill them or they bury themselves deep, the is actually quite a bit more to worm farming, that's why sometimes they are there

Senior fisho is right. It does also depend on what you throw in there. Most worms don't like citrus for example.
