i think they'll be fine if they are australian prawns.

some of them come from china and possibly other areas and can have a disease called white spot or something, bad news im told.

I don’t think it was ever illegal to use food grade prawns but there was a scare a little while back on WSD that stuffed up prawn farms up north killing off complete farm stock over night Sort of millions of dollars of prawns and some prawns where found in the wild with WSD around the prawn farm areas From that point it seamed to go quiet the scare was that it may get into wild stock and could effect prawn crab lobster bass yabby and bugger up the whole fish eco system I still don’t know if WSD effects wild stock as badly as prawn farmed stock The. Blame for the outbreak was put on fishos using food grade prawn from overseas where white spot outbreaks where common Again these could be farmed fish and not wild stock. Any way I still use food grade prawn but only Australian I don’t know if that is any help for you

What you can do

It is crucial that people fishing or crabbing anywhere in Australia's waterways, including Victoria, do not use prawns meant for human consumption as bait.

Recreational fishers should check their bait for signs of WSD and NOT use food grade prawns as bait.
