Smile Squid jigs V Bait skewers. What's best?

Post by Kestrel » Tue Oct 29, 2019 10:21 pm

Hi guys
I've used both methods with some success but these days I rarely hear about the technique of skewering a pilchard or similar and then suspending it under a float.
So... what's your preference and what do you think works best?
Cheers
Kestrel :)

I definitely believe jigs are better, caught more fish on them and less hassle

Unlike a lot of other fish, squid rely heavily on their sense of sight, and you have a million different colour options with jigs to suit the siutation.

Jigs being worked catch 90% more than bait. I only use bait on jigs if anchored

Yep anchored at night is the one time where I use bait over jigs.

I've had more success of jigs and skewered whiting/pilchards in WPB. The problem is depth and how it remains stagnant under a float where a worked jigs, can go over various depths and areas until you find them.

Yeah, you are right, you don't hear about the Skewered fish/jig method much. I agree with AE092 and the benefits of a "dynamic" worked squid jig.

Might also be because of more awareness of the Squid Jigs and also the inconvenience of having a fish to skewer. I still use the Skewer method but only in certain circumstances.

A third and different method I use more often than the Skewer Method is the Teaser Method.

The "Teaser Method"
An unweighted fish (Tommie/Aussie Herring or a little Silver Whiting) tied (wire loop through the eyes, or vertically done through the head & jaw) to a line, no float, no jag, just a fish on the mainline clipped by a swivel. Cast in a weedy broken bottom area and let it drift, float sway in the water, it would work it's way to the bottom. When a Squid grabs it, the line would peel on the reel, so have the drag light, slowly bring in the Squid to the surface and then pull the fish out of the water and quickly plonk a Squid Jag on another rod setup next to the Squid, it should grab it with vigour.

If you feel the squid let go of the fish before you get it close, then stop reeling and let it go. The squid should grab the fish again.
But while you wait, you now know there is a hungry squid there so start casting you casting jag in that vicinity, to hopefully get it that way.

Cheers, Bugs

The Teaser method works exceptionally well when the squid are very tentative. Even on a boat (just need to add a small bean sinker when on the drift), especially when there's a following sqid that won't take the jig but once a teaser fish is presented, it would most often grab it, and then with the swap, would then grab the jig.

Def bait when kgw fishing.
50/50 sometimes bait is better the 50 thousand cast of jig.
Sometimes a jig under a float works well.
To many boats kayak, helicopter , catch a fish, catch a fish

:rf:

I used to use skewered whiting for the big cala at night.
Squid jig during the day (sometimes at night too).
Most of the monster kraken caught on skewered bait at night.

Squid is very sustainable according to the fisheries. They breed quickly and give birth to baby squid in enormous amount. Generally easy to catch big or small, great bait and great for the table.

Skewered bait or jig, it's great either way. :tu:
