Is this site becoming redundant?

Post by Mattblack » Wed Sep 05, 2018 1:34 pm

Is this site becoming redundant because of the array of new forms of social media available?
Interested in any opinions on the matter, and where is the next best place to discuss Victorian fishing if not here?

It's getting to that point. There's a lot of non fishing stuff here that I don't have an interest in. I join the fishing groups from the Geelong area which gives me access to more tailored and relevant info.

The world moves so fast, sites like this are cumbersome and becoming redundant sadly and with limited funds to make it into an app I agree it's days might be numbered.

This is only my thoughts... I love this community and I've learnt heaps!

Not sure the other forms of social media is new but they are certainly taking over.

Whilst facebook and instagram is great for posting pics and fishing reports they are terrible for discussion.

Forums are still by far the best method for for discussion but with lack of reports people are loosing interest.

Lack of reports because only few regulars are posting. Many are just here for the info and they are gone.

TKe the time to post up.reports and it will be back to its former glory.
I've had enough of posting reports due to pic size limits and besides I think it's time non regular posters of reports started chipping in..

A report does not need to include your spot x .
Just a general location will be enough.

When I shifted to Australia, 4 years ago, I had no idea what the species of fish were here and how to fish for them.
The search function and contents of this forum helped me a great deal.

Not to mention that ive met some of the members on here and has greatly improved me as an angler.
and even my quality of life!
fishing and travelling go hand in hand.

Its a good starting point and great platform for long form discussion and learning.
I do not think its being more "redundant" per say, but just less appealing for the general masses that like to binge social media content, in a more easily accessible format. It has its place though, just need to engage more with the members.

To me the bigger irks
-the image size limitations while posting pictures
-the sheer number of guttered threads, its something we will all have to consciously avoid.

Maybe,
-having more frequent meet ups?
-a concerted monthly comp with a rotating target species, one in fresh and one in salt?
potentially could engage more interaction.
There is always more to learn , fish to catch , places to see and friends to make.

Image size keeps coming up as a turn off to posting pic on this site.

What I do, is create an album on Facebook, upload the images there and then link them to here, Facebook resizes and removes any identifying data of the location. You don’t need to copy or save the image back to your pc( unless you want to ) just use the image link and paste it here.
Once you get used to it, it takes no time at all.

So will I but the result will be the same, ;-) cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them
