Post counts. Do we need them?

Well, do we? It appears this topic requires some discussion. What are you thoughts on post counts? Is it just a harmless number against a profile, or do you strongly feel that some members use it as a pissing competition, therefore post rubbish posts to boost up their tally?
Or, should the system be changed to a degree. What if we were allocated so many posts per annum, and once they're all gone you can't post again till the end of the year? Maybe "likes" received could redeem so many posts? This would certainly make people think twice before posting rubbish, and in turn providing incentive to improve post quality. This would also discard the concerns towards some members treating post counts as some kind of competition. Not saying we need to go down this road, but it's an idea.
What are your thoughts FV members?

I dont think anyone here with high post counts actually care about post counts like people think they do. It's just literally how they post - and probably use other forms of text communication - high volume of short content. So no i dont think removing it would make a difference.

Think there's a time and a place for it - it can get annoying when you are trying to read a thread with proper conversation going on - but conversely on the slower threads its good knowing there be a bit to read then you are taking the afternoon toilet break. :te:

Thing i find more annoying - is people quoting a full massive report to just write a short one liner, its a lot to continuously scroll through to read one line. No need to quote in that scenario - people can figure out what you are responding to!

I'm open to suggestions from members.
I'll add a POLL

If you do vote, it would be great if you could also provide some feedback or reasons for discussion... :tu:

Cheers

Yeah, I dont know why people think they are posting for the sake of upping their post count, what exactly is that going to achieve?? I've never understood why people think that.

Why are people so hung up on the post count?

Who's counting and why?

If you guys don't want to see posts from other members, put them on you foes list and be done with it.

Maybe once it reaches 1000 it should just say 1000+
Then you can see if they are a frequent contributor.

RE my post about this topic in the other thread, I read often enough “post count” coming up in a negative way, with accusations of people deliberately trying to up their numbers by making individual replies. If the post count doesn’t really benefit the forum and removing it will stop these accusations being thrown around, I figure we might as well remove it? I’m sure the regulars on the forum know who does and doesn’t make lots of posts and who does or doesn’t makes quality posts.
Thoughts?
