Re: Thought it was a snapper
Gummys swim back to the boat as they cruise up current after a few runs. Have had snapper do it plenty of times too. They don't do it with the sheer power and speed of an eagle though.
I hate eagle rays. A huge annoyance when you hook 3-4 big ones a session and even with decent gear and heavy drags you can take 15 mins to get them in.

Port Jackson and Elephants are renowned for swimming towards you, when they take the bait. Especially landbased.
Eagle rays, usually just swallow and run like a freight train, change direction lots and make life hard lol but great fun

the biggest would have easy have been 15+ min to get up the the kayak on 10 kg gear
they can and do give you work out thats for sure
more fun was towing one a 1.5 km to the beach to measure it on a brag mat for a species comp , if anything can turn you off a heading its towing an eagle ray

Yep, an Eagle has landed. Have hooked a few big ones landbased fishing in Western port taking 15 mins to land. Arms almost ready to fall off at the end of the fight. :lolf: They are great sport and liven up a session when nothing is biting.

Re: Thought it was a snapper
Not to long ago i caught a grey ray , the first time it was on a whiting rod so i just left my rod in the holder and it eventually busted it self off after 20 mins.
about 20 mins later had big run snapper on the rod, had lots of runs and taking me around the boat , was shatterd when i got it to boat it was just a ray,it did not just sit there in one spot, so i thought it might be a gummy or snapper

Re: Thought it was a snapper
I have hooked and landed quite a few of these of recent, largest being a bit under 1.5-2m big, guessing weight was around 40-50kg, 35m battle with a constant 7kg of drag on the fish the entire time
