Fish ID; What could it have been?
So in around 7 to 8 meters off sandringham, my reel started screaming, and I mean screaming, faster than a big 6kg snapped takes my baits.
Stripped 150 to 200 meters off in a couple of seconds. I tightened my drag and got massive head shakes, and the line shot off to the right, instead of going further away from the boat, changing direction before I could blink.
felt some more headshakes and ping. Line broke.
I had 30lb finns braid and 40lb black magic leader.
The knot didn't break, infact the leader was cut clean through a few inches above where the hook would have been (roughly 5 inches)
Any theory to what it could have been. Pulled like a huge kingy, like a train, with insane dexterity.
Also, I have 10 ft of 40 lb trace, so it wasn't a ray, they don't have teeth and the leader wouldn't cut on it's skin.
Not sure a big snapper would bite through 40lb and take a hook 6 inches into it's stomach.
Bait was a whole fillet of salmon, a 1.5kg fish. (roughly 10 inches long) to a 8/0 circle.
go at it. hypothesize for me, anyone that knows the rouge species in the bay!

You sure it wasn't a kingie that busted you off? It would have only needed to find a rock or some sort of structure to rub against the line running at that pace and it'd be all over.

Re: Fish ID; What could it have been?
sand /weed bottom. no structure around. It was on my drift path.
line had NO abraision. was like someone cut it with scissors.
I checked 25m of line for abrasion on the mono and braid. none.
never seen a bronzie or seven gill move that fast. was like, probably '45km/h'
was about the same speed as the boat at full throttle.
Also didn't know sharks will come to brighton/sandy area in 7m.
here is my theory untill someone can create a better one.

Generally with bite offs the abrasion is noticeable on the leader abover the cut section.
I dont know of a fish that fast in ppb. If it was moving at 60km/hr I think most reels would combust.

Linc- "slimeys are great fun to catch, like hooking a giant vibrator with a propeller onto the end of your rod! Well done"

hey, seriously. I want to find out what it could have been. not sure 'cuda come that far into the bay..andyk wrote:Must have been a scuber diver with a sea scooter and pair of sissors ??????????
leatherjacket, shark, 'cuda, not sure what else there could be that would do it.
I've caught small mako's and threshers along the coast all the way to sorrento, very infrequently, but never above 60cm (head to tail length)
and nah. only after a bit.
here's the unfolding.
-hear reel going
-see line after a few seconds, a good 100m+ away
-line slows
-picks up rod
-pulls.
-line zooms out at half the speed of initial hit
-pulls again getting headshakes
-like zooms off to right.
-line cut
drag's broken now, on the reel. it's like..no drag.
also broke the rod, cracked.
Need a new reel and rod now.
I'm inclined to rogue kingy or eagle ray..but all options are unlikely.
give 15km/h and say 45km/h, I didn't stand there and go, 'oh, let me look at how fast..' I was in a rush to stop the rod going to the drink - broke anyway.
still. nothing should do that where I was.

telltale signs of a mako/thresher.Master-pro wrote:Mako?
but I mean. not just off sandringham beach area (between beach and yacht club)
in 7 meters of water,
little far from home for a mako IMO
it'd have to be big enough to break the drag on a 4000 'cheap' reel. $60 reel.
and crack my similarly priced shimano rod.
Just doesn't have a logical explanation really.

purple is rougly how the line went, and the distance (got almost to breakwall)
it's my flathead drift spot, which I clearly just gave away :a_goodjob:
