Gunnamatta surf Sunday July 3rd

Post by hornet » Sun Jul 03, 2016 10:47 pm

Went to Gunnamatta today, stopped at maca's for brecky then onward to the beach and started fishing at 8am as high tide was at 10.30 am, the beach was very busy so me and two mates had to walk about 600 meters before we got past the last of the fishermen.

We used pilchards and squid, I beat the water to foam with every lure I had to no avail, fishing was slow and one mate got 3 salmon the other mate got none and I got a sand crab ! disappointing day I was looking forward to hooking a couple.

Of note one of the mates salmon looks to have encountered a shark ? and escaped, the wound was healing well till he was caught, lucky but unlucky, side wash was annoying and lasted most of the day, pulled the pin at 3.30 pm low tide, this has to be the most spasmodic beach to fish.

That's a cool photo and unlucky for the salmon :bite:

It's a constant struggle of life and death in the sea, I have heard from old timer's that Bronzies follow the salmon schools around and pick off the sick and slow.

I was there n Saturday morning , and the same thing happened to me . Tried every lure in the box and didnt get a hit. The side wash was crazy.

The surfers werent there , so they obviously knew that the sidewash was present.

anyway to foresee such conditions ?
How much is it dependent on wind direction?

I am relatively new to surf fishing and would love some inputs :)

cheers!

You did better than me. I wonder if that gash on the fish was caused by an albatross or something
