I used 28gm because my rod ideal lure weight is only up to 35gm. It's Daiwa lateo 9ft6 rod.

Depending on the swell at gunnamatta I fish 40-60g, usually run 50's though.

If they’re close to shore 28 is fine but often I’m casting further into channels so I tend to go 60gm but I’m using a 9ft Catana

40g halco outcasts cast a mile, only problem is the paint chips off so you'll want to invest in some silver (or whatever) paint to touch them up every now and then. Apparently nail polish is good for painting lures but as a heterosexual man I've never owned any, maybe a bream fisho can provide more detail

Yea Seb Id find 28 g way too light for lures. Usually use around the 40-45g size. My missus likes using the 30 but I just find I get the extra distance casting the 40-45s :thumbsup:

Great report on a great day out Seb. Always good going with a mate , , , , one of the benefits is any "fishing story" of a great catch can always be backed up by a mate , , , , um, who would probably lie for a mate anyway , , , , see, win win.

I don’t bother with baits down there so good on you for giving it a go. Some days baits outfish lures but for sambos I only use lures.
I like the nice shiny ones so when I’m casting into channels I can see if I can land a Quicksilver, Billabong or Hurley

I like lure fishing for salmons, especially with nice light outfit. No need to bring heavy rod sinkers etc. Very mobile and look for the fish.
I was introducing surf fishing to my mate, hence we tried both bait and 28gm metal. Few more trips and he'll get the hang of it, and be ready for surf/rock fishing for salmons on metals.
And yes, sometimes bait outfish lure and lure outfish bait. Has its own place.

for launching heavier lure i have the shimano nano xt 902 rated 10-45g cast,s a 40g a long way load,s up well.The other is the gomoku 9ft rated 30-80g does a 40g easy so no problem chucking a 60g on it each rod cost me $115.Some guy,s on here like the penn allegiance i have not used these so cant comment how they preform the gomoku is made from the penn prevail blank so has a bit more graphite compared to the allegiance
