Bollocks. Try using a 25 gram lure on an average day on the backbeaches, see what happens when your trying to pull it through a bit of current or with a bit of sidewind..
In the bay, fine, but out there..not a f####ing hope unless its pan flat with no wind or a dead tail.

One time out on the bay, we were using Light soft plastics, the only problem was the hooks were getting bent.

Secondly if the lure is too light, you will not be able to cast very far.

I think when he said "use the lightest lure you possibly can" he meant you should use the lightest lure that conditions allow you to fish.
For example, if the fish are close in and it's a calm day you don't have to use a really big/heavy lure, because as others have mentioned smaller lures have their advantages.
However, if it's windy and rough, use a heavier lure but still as light as you can go while still getting the lure in the target zone.


I'm by no means an expert on salmon but that's just how I read it. :)
