Thanks Sebb, was planning just to go for squid at Mornington but after hearing all the reports of salmon I'll definitely dedicate some time to fast retrieving plastics.

You could always throw out a baited line with pilchard, they won't pass that up. If your catching heaps from bait then it's a good indication that they're there in good numbers which you then could throw out a lure and try your luck that way.

Good idea.
I'd do the same. Mix up squid jig and metal/plastic.
They come in school usually, so when you get one salmon, good chance there's more of them patrolling the area.

I heard about them busting up down this way, spotted some birds working off Clifton Springs yesterday.

Still some good fish around Barwon Heads at the mouth, big trev's and salmon pushing through with the current. Plastics seem to be the go.
Caught these the past week on 3" plastics, 1/4 3.0 big heads. Had three bigger fish shake the hooks as the current was insane w/ king tide.

Only usually fish the ocean (in a boat). Getting soft in my old age - I don't fish it even in the slightest southerly. Soooo - reliving a long past with my dad I thought why not try flicking some metal at this "famous beach" Gunnamatta (Went for a flick at Kilcunda a couple of weeks ago and blitz it - only a couple of other people there.......).
Should be quite - a southerly - what person in their right mind would fish it......
WTF! It was like Bourke St mall and snapper season rolled into one. Never new it was so popular.......
To answer the question - yep - saw a lot of people (bailt'os) getting salmon........think I'll find myself a quieter beach!

Have you been fishing for squid in St Leonards, Andrews? Any good lately?
