Hi Dave,

You can get gars all year round and anytime of the day. They can be very mobile so right time and right place is usually the important factor of being successful.
To me, slack tide and quiet wind is good.
I've been on kayak suoer early morning with bright LED lights, and they were all around me I could scoop them with my net. So yeah, they do get attracted by lights.
What sort of LED setup did you use out of interest?
I made it myself. Strip LED, PVC pipe, rubber switch, etc. Bright as.

I ended up going down to St Leonards that night, but no luck. Got the proverbial "You should have been here last night...".

Them's the breaks. A few of the blokes were getting some good KG's though.

I'm starting to learn that in Victoria, you need to take all types of bait and set-ups.

Ah, the usual comments.
Yesterday was good and tomorrow will be good, but never today. Lol.
Just unlucky.

But yeah, always bring few diff setups. You never know.
Do some research of what usually people catch at the spot and bring the gears.

Fishing is a bit like pizza.

No matter how bad it gets...it's still pizza.

Yeah St Leonards would have been a little tough with the clarity from the past few E winds.
I'll be giving it a go this weekend to test out a new reel, happy to provide an update.

Should be gars once the water cools late autumn. There has not been many around at the moment.
