Here's my first report in a while, spent a few hrs Friday night at the warmies with the family. First cast and it was pretty much on with a fish every cast, we ended up holding just one rod each and just having a lot of fun on light gear. After 3 hrs we pulled the pin as it got freezing cold but managed a nice bag of pinkies, 17 in total with size ranging from 31cm - 37cm we also released dozens of just sized fish.

Baits used: salted mackerel chunks.

Rods used: 6 ft" 2 - 4 kg rod

Reel size: 2500 shimano sienna

Lines used: 8 LB braid with 10 LB mono lead

Rigs used: double drop rig with tear drop sinker on bottom

Hook size: 3/0 gama octopuse


I saw few old guys catching tailor too aswell as pinkies, seemed like everyone was doing well down my side of rocks. Goodluck everyone and I hope your all practicing social distancing when soaking a line, saw a lot of fishos too distracted with fishing and forgetting.

That's the salted mackerel chunks in the bowl that I used as bait. Does seem to work realy well and cheaper than a frozen bag of Pilly at the servo. It's also harder for the smaller fish to steal your bait.

Why salted & not just raw. Used to be able to by salted whitebait, I reckon it's better than now

The mackerel has been in the freezer for so long it was kinda soft and mushy so I added the salt to toughen it up. Works great, otherwise it woulda just fallen off when we cast. I've done this before with chicken fillets and old pilchard too and it works wonders.

The salt draws out the moisture and makes the meat tougher. Just like curing fish to eat.

thought this will help some parents who wants to get thier kids into fishing especially.

I organised a nice family bbq at Barwonheads area on boxing day with a lot of kids keen on hooking some fish, got there at 8am with bait all in almost immediately.

Took only 1 minute for the first fish to land on the jetty, believe me when I say it was really noisey with excitement. The next 5 hrs went so quick and before we knew it, the esky was full of fish.

Kids were all tired from screaming n yelling n prancing around

Anyways, back to the Warmies

It is also about a nice feed , , , , and that you have. The Family would have had a ball and those Pinkies do put up a decent amount of fun in their fight. And also now, a few Dinners as well.
