I'd probably buy it again, it has been flogged since I got it and hasn't really missed a beat. Comes with a basic GPS and map built in which a lot of similarly priced sounders don't have (I could be wrong on this though).
you must be pretty confordent in your kayak, id be worried if it rolled over... gone over a few times in mine, but not fishing, just messin around

The sounder went under water when I fell out at Portland, still works fine. I'm getting a bit of corrosion on the power plugs but one day I'll pull my finger out and buy some grease to protect them. The thermometer in it died at some stage, pretty sure the water temp at Shoreham that day wasn't 79C

I run a HDS 5, next time I would get a HDS 7 or 9 for the larger screen.

I prefer two units I have a foruno 585 and a raymarine a98. Only had the raymarine for 6 months but I like it touch screen works good even tuna tube could work it. The foruno is great best thing is the rotary gain adjustment no drop down menus just turn the knob to adjust .

What is the advantage of two units? Do they pick up different things?

One as a sounder one as a chartplotter both large screens. When trolling I can mark bait schools and see my track very clearly. Also the raymarine has down vision so in the bay I can run 50 200 on the foruno and down vision on the raymarine.
But the biggest reason as I am getting older my vision for reading I need glasses having 2 large screens instead of one screen split in half imagine a hds 10 when split in half 5 inch sounder 5 inch chartplotter. Mine I have 8.5 inch sounder and 9 inch chartplotter. No swapping changing pushing buttons but at the end of the day it comes down to a personal preference for me I like 2 units

Fair enough. Could an iPad with the Navionics app do the same job as the sounder you use as chartplotter?

/\ yes. but many prefer to run two units as its just easier since its all installed in the boat and up and running.
ideally i would like to have seperate units to see the screen more clearly. otherwise always buy the biggest screen you can afford.

and here what the tress in blue rock would look like with DSI

Top notch, will get the same thing on my next boat for sure
man, thats some serious setup..
i use the ipad with navioncs as well as sounder, i like your set with 2, any chance of a pic one day?
Definitely happy with this setup, I'll always go with 2 screens now, absolutely the way to go. Split screen is a pain in the ass haha
