furuno/transducer combo for port phillip bay

Post by Matthew drako » Tue Oct 15, 2019 7:32 am

hey guys,
purchased a furuno recently and paired it with a airmar p66 tranny.(transom mount)
just wondering what pictures this transducer would give paired with the furuno in terms of will it show arches or ticks or lines for snapper in 20m of water or less. our garmin sounder with the standard transducer really only showed lines hence the upgrade.

Hi Matthew.

Yeah, I agree, chatting with the guys in the know would be best.

I have spoken to the Furuno Agent here in SA many a time back in the day, "Stan" and boy is he the man when it comes to Furuno :tu:

He is very knowledged and has a good perspective on all things Furuno. He would definitely give you fantastic insight.

Stan is based out of "Taylor Marine"

Good luck with it, let us know how you get on, be interesting to see if Stan gets ellivated to God status :-D

Cheers, Bugatti

Which sounder are you using Matthew?
You should see boomerangs in 20 metres not a problem with the P66.
I used to fish with Furuno 582 paired with the P66 and would show great soundings at good speed.
If you get on facebook and look up Richard Abela(Dreamcatcher fishing charters) he does one on one sounder guides on your boat and he will teach you how to get the best out of your sounder. A friend of mine recently installed the 588 and did a guide with him and he couldn't have had more praise for what he learnt in the one outing. Good luck with your learning (you don't always need to do a guide, youtube can be your friend).

P66 on 50KHz will show arches but not as big as the Lawrence ultra wide angle transducer.

On 200kHz they are smaller arches, not blobs but heading in that direction.

To find fish you want to use 50kHz or dual mode.

Yes what Frozenpod said. A P66 transducer has 10deg beam on 200khz and 45deg on 50khz. If i recall correctly. To put that in perspective. Very narrow beams of 4-6 deg will make fish appear as small dots, but they do fantastic bottom shape pics. Cray fishermen looking for crevasses use them. At 10 deg you will get small arches when you move directly over the fish. The short pulse length of the 200 will also help detect fish close to the bottom.
45deg combined with a long pulse is a totally different kettle of fish. You will get large arches from fish that are well off the bottom. You will also get long trails under the initial bottom echo. These trails will be shorter on smooth muddy bottom and long on rough coral or stony bottom. By running on dual frequency you can see all this info.

Wow this is rocket science stuff forme.
Meanwhile somewhere out there, there's me, whenever I see anything on the screen, I drop the bait. LoL.
Sorry for spamming. I hope one day I could get a boat with a nice sounder and out there with the knowledge to read the sounder.
