Boat Cleaning & Salt-Away
Has anyone ever used a product called "Salt-Away"?
Is it worth it or are there better ways to clean your boat and flush the motor?

Re: Boat Cleaning & Salt-Away
I haven't used it.
The key aspect of flushing the motor is to make sure you run it long enough to open the thermostat(s).
If you don't parts of the motor don't get flushed.
I typically use a fast idle for 10 minutes.
Also for 4 stroke owners new internal anodes every 12 months.

After fishing i go to the Carwash, connect a Hose to the engine and run it, while it is running i place $4 in the slot and select hot wax...clean all the boat inside out with it, when it's stop i stop the engine, collect my hose and go home .....easy

...and this is why I like this website! I've only been flushing the motor for about 5 minutes on idle and had no idea about the anodes.
Do you spray anything with WD40/lanolube/etc whilst you're at it?

i havent used it cause of the pricing.Mattblack wrote:Has anyone ever used a product called "Salt-Away"?

but i usually flush the engine first (using the matine flush option) for about 5 mins or so until i can feel warm water coming out the tell tail.
(not all carwash have marine flush, so thats a big problem)
then use a high pressure soap and was the boat and trailer.
mind you mine is a polyboat so no need for much washing. but trailer does
the bigger glass boats etc, ive seen people using the soap brush and scrubbing etc.

Re: Boat Cleaning & Salt-Away
i rarely flush my outboard , i know everyone says different and should be done each time, i use it weekly and maintain all of it my self..i do hose it off at the car wash and sometimes soap it up,
in 12months ive put on over 100hourson motor and never had a water flow issue..YET..lol
in saying that, ive seen people start their outboards dry for a second or two before entering the ramp... mine has never been run on a dry start ever... thats when things can go bad...

Re: Boat Cleaning & Salt-Away
I would suggest leaving the outboard with salt in the galleries for a week is not the best idea.
Whilst there are many theorys I know pros who use there boats 3 times plus a week and don't run into corrosion issues.
I don't flush if I am fishing the next day but otherwise I flush everytime.
PS if you every pull down a motor or remove the anodes on a motor that was not flushed you will be blow away by how much salt is in there.
Salt plus moisture plus times equals dead motor.
