Re: Used boat recomendation 5 to 5.8 mt range
The southwind 6m is a fun sporty boat called a SF20 or SR20 from memory.
But they were cheaply and lightly built most would be in the tip by now.
Timber is an excellent material for boat building as the material priorities match fiberglass well.
Most boats the stringers and floor tend to last about 30 years so consider that they need a rebuild once in their life is pretty good.

Yes. If you get lucky. Or buy a less proven hull.
The reality is. The 5-6m range rrp for $60-100k brand new depending on the builder. To get an excellent boat for $20k is dreaming unless you get lucky by having the cash there and can move fast.
Yesterday I was busy. Got sent on a group chat a pic of a v17r without a floor. $3.8k on trailer. I went back that night to have a look when I was free Cos I was going to try and talk myself into it. It was gone because of how cheap it was.
Doing the sums. New transom and floor and a cut/shut to cc would be somewhere around $12k. Probably $6-7k to keep as an R but then add cash for bimini etc. Plus a low hours motor and basic electronics. Looking at a $30k spend all up on a questionable trailer. $34k would have a new trailer under it. But ultimately probably cost $40k Cos theres always budget creep.
That’s super rough numbers and I’ve had a few beers watching the Super Bowl but the reality is. 5-6m range for $20k will be a compromise. 4-5m can get some nice examples by looking hard enough.

The "less proven hull" line gather that means the less popular makes not the better known Haines, Cruise Craft Caribbean etc ?
I saw a Haines 17 something too on ebay few years back hull only on trailer it looked good in the pics had no reserve
and lot of guys jumped on the bids started at $100 went for around 4 k from memory.
Is 12 K the going rate on a 17 now days floor & transom ??
Are the current 80 to 100K you beaut new boats "wood free" ?? cause that's a decent whack later
The 20K deals are still ok today & achievable , sure most have got old 2 strokes on them rather tidy up a engine than any "cut n shut" hull work,
few guys on here have 90's boats & are very happy with them.

I’ve never had it officially quoted but I think new floor and transom will run you $6-8k. The 12 I mentioned was my best guess at the mods needed to make an R a CC. Again not quoted.taipan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 12:32 pmKimtown wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:04 amducky wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:00 amYes. If you get lucky. Or buy a less proven hull.

Nice buy there wow !....... looks like the guy has spent a few bob on it.
What is "coosa" board
If it were me I'd want to see all receipts on the hull work, who did it & if the work was
still in warranty and still get a shipwright pre purchase go over inspection.

Re: Used boat recomendation 5 to 5.8 mt range
Coosa board is a composite material. It's like an ultra high density foam. Thermolite is a similar material.
Most new boats are still wood. It's really only your 'boutique' builders using composites like Cootacraft etc. Haines group do give you the option of using composites at a higher cost in their Signatures
