Boat purchase help

Post by Jezza94 » Thu Jul 30, 2020 9:06 am

Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster

I'm looking around at purchasing my first boat, I have ~5k to spend.

Not interested in glass boats, only something big enough to accommodate 2 people fishing... Forward control is preferred however I'd be happy with a deep vee tiller

I've been eyeing these two off, however the age of the motor is a bit of a worry.

Could I get some thoughts on the topic please? Fishing wise - mainly around Anderson's Inlet, Metung, Lakes Entrance, Northern end of WPB (Tooradin, Warneet) and PPB on the calmest of days.

It seems you get more boat in a tiller steer

What should I be looking out for condition wise?

Sorry about all the questions but I'm a big ol' newbie to boating.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Any brands/makes of tiller steers I should keep an eye out for?

Has anyone had experience with the Quintrex Darts or the Savage Snipes?

I'd be looking at Yamaha if your getting 2nd hand (try and get a long shaft setup).

Second hand boats .
So theres no choice to pick what motor you get.
Whats on the boat is what your obviously getting.
Buying a long shaft motor and then trying to pair that with a short transom is going to only end one way..

As for motors
Usually for that price range you will encounter mostly 2 strokes.
Tohatsu, mercury, Yamaha are all good brands to look for. Tiller steer and forward controls will still use the same motor just different operating mechanisms . One is obvious tiller steer where you use your hand to control the motor.
Forward controls have a steering and also a throttle and forward /reverse levers which is a lot easier to use.

Some expensive tiller steer models come with a tilt and trim as well as electric start option but they are generally 4 stroke models and more pricier.

Make sure the trailer is also in good nick as it's an important aspect of boating. If the trailer is bust then you cannot go fishing...

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I'll go with a tiller steer. There's a few Stacer Seasprite 390-395's around - any experience with these hulls?

Quintrex 420 Dory or similar size would be ideal (just have to find one for the right price)
