12V BOAT TRAILER ELECTRIC WINCH

Post by Paulanderson » Sun Oct 09, 2022 7:56 pm

I would appreciate recommendations for a reliable 12V boat trailer electric winch. The boat is a 4.5 M Savage Scorpion aluminium runabout.

Thanks from Paul

Paul, those are ok but a good one would not be cheap and sometimes requires heavy battery cables to be run from car battery to back of tow car, maybe consider some sort of a good quality boat catch if you do solo trips and drive the boat off and on and probably about 1/3 of the price
I have a quintrex boat with a quintrex trailer which their own system called -Catch and release which works great

I put a 3500lb winch on my trailer ,had it for a year and only cost $150 hasent failed yet so I purchased a spare one
If they last a year which it already has im happy
Made a wood battery box and stuck it on the trailer at the front using a battery from a electric scooter

I mount starter motors on to hand winches. Manual winching is not affected. Winch is very fast. Does require that you are 'useful with tools' though.
Typical cost about $300. Will winch a 18 ft FG boat on in about 20-25 seconds. Very useful (quick) for beach retreivals where waves/swell is an issue.
Last one I did we used a battery box in the back of the tow vehicle so expensive cabling was not an issue.- still used anderson connectors though.
PM me if you want details... I'll give you the link to anSA website where I posted the whole process.
BTW... I'm in Adelaide so I'm not in a position to drop around to help....

What's the benefit of electric on something so small and light weight?

Yep makes sense. Are you driving on or walking/winching on? If you're driving on I'd look at a boat catch. The electric definitely makes sense if you're walking on.

I made my first one for a person with a heart condition. It was either get a good winch or get rid of the boat. Since then about 6 more have been for people with health worries.
I made mine coz back then I was lazy..... and beach retreives often need to be quick. Now I'm still lazy but a lot older... I was born in the first half of last century !! .. and beach retrieves still need to be quick!

In the region I fish, drive-on is discouraged by the local council because of the damage to the bottom of the ramp (where the concrete ends) that is caused. Its not illegal--- yet!
