Camera recommendations

Post by ducky » Fri May 14, 2021 6:39 pm

Hey,

It’s my sons 10th birthday upcoming and we’ve been at a loss to find something to get him. I’ve told him he is getting to the age where we need to get practical things rather than toys.

Have learnt that he has taken a real liking to media/photography stuff at school so to nurture that a bit I think a camera would be a good investment. He loves his bugs and wildlife etc so I figure a future broomy would be handy

Now this is a 10yo kid so it doesn’t have to be the most high tech in the world. But I think something capable of half decent macro photos would be the go because the majority of the time will be spent photographing bugs. I know I’ve been made to photograph bull ants etc on bushwalks. The iPhone does a horrendous job of quick macros.

Budget is up to around $200 but honestly if the tech is not suitable at that we may have to stretch it.

Any ideas?

Hey Ducky, I used to sell film and digital cameras many many moons ago...
Now $200 is not a big budget, however it doesn’t mean that you can’t get a camera that takes good pictures. I would highly recommend looking second hand cameras.
Seeing your son is turning ten, I wouldn’t recommend getting an SLR (interchangeable lens and camera body). However I would recommend one that can shoot in Manual function.
I would highly recommend looking at Canon G9 or G10. These are robust great cameras that take amazing pictures and won’t hurt the hip pocket. These cameras are generally used by serious photographers that didn’t want to lug around their photography kits. I’ve seen them on eBay for around $200. I’d suggest to get a new battery if it’s sold with its original batteries.
They have a good lens, decent size camera sensor and have a magnesium body so it won’t break easily. The only down side is it can be a little heavier than similar sized body cameras.

Hope that helps. Feel free to PM me for any more details or recommendations.

Cheers mate. Appreciate the response. I’ll suss them out.

Agreed $200 is almost guaranteed to not be enough. I’m a bit averse to getting second hand as a birthday present but I’ll visit a camera store and see what’s up.

I would recommend this; complete MFT kit with much better IQ than small sensor compacts:

I recently got the same for my 10 year old daughter and she loves it.

Pretty cool mate. Googling them seems like they were new in 2012 give or take?

I’ll research a bit more before pulling the trigger on second hand but that does look good

No worries mate.
Just don’t get sucked in with Megapixels and zoom, the lens and sensor makes a difference.

I was discussing this last night with the missus. She has a canon eos kiss (650d) dslr I bought her just before the kids were born. It’s barely been used. Sitting in the cupboard.

I’m thinking it will be a lot more cost effective and a better result to buy the lenses needed to suit this camera and just give him the camera etc to use.

If the hobby takes off down the line I’d imagine the lenses also are interchangeable?

That’s a good idea if you already have the camera.

Yes you can get better lenses for the EOS 650D.
Did you get the standard 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lenses?
I’d suggest you get your son to use those lens first before upgrading, as lens (especially good ones) cost $1k+.

I reckon it’s just an 18-55mm. The miso soup will dig it out tomorrow for a review.
