Live baiting

Post by BIG GAV » Fri May 20, 2016 10:42 am

With a free night Saturday n full moon in place me n a few mates are keen to chase the yarramundi. I'm concerned about live baiting.. Do I throw it out unweighted or weighted? If weighted how much lead n leader should I be using?

Not really a fish I'm at all familiar with only had a few failed attempts so any help is appreciated!

Thanks gents

Are you fishing off the banks or the wharfs?

If fishing off the bank cast them out with a running sinker to a swivel and then about 1m of leader to your hook with the livie pinned on it. When fishing bridges and similar structures I use the same rig but drop them straight down against the structure. By having the sinker running on an ezy rig allows you to let the fish run with the livie without it feeling any resistence. Also make sure you suit your leader and hook size to the bait. The other night I could only get tiny livies so I was using a 3/0 with 20lb leader but if I am able to get good size mullet I'll use 40-60lb leader and a 4/0-7/0 hook. Goodluck!

there is no hard answer for this bud, it depends on the size of the bait and the pull of the tide, you need enough to pin it to the bottom without the bait dragging the sinker around.
Use your easy rig and change it up depending on the tide / bait size ect.

Depends on the current as fitzy said, I usually use 2oz or if Im fishing close to pylons with bigger livebait I'll go heavier so they can't wrap me up.

I don't mind the old paternoster rig for livies, 2oz sinker would cover the yarra
