Milk crate alternative for kayak

Hi all,

With some luck, I'll be getting a new kayak in few weeks. Either a slayer10 or titan10.5.

I've been thinking about milk crate replacement as I need something waterproof and yet still has easy access, and light.

Milk crate is great, nice and light, I can attach cut up pvc pipe as a rod holder, etc. But I lost some stuff before and also my tackle bag gets wet all the time.

So I need ideas to replace the milk crate with something waterproof with a lid/clip/lock whatever and so I can put the tackle boxes right in, without a need of a bag even.
Something that I can just turn around, open, get the stuff I need and close. Yet still light and waterproof.

There are some experienced kayak fisho here, I'll hear other storage alternatives too.

I'm not a avid yakker... but whenever I go on the water I use one of these storage drums.... available from Bunnings for about $25+

I use the drum mainly because they will float if it ends up overboard.

There’s quite a few commercial kayak crates available online if you don’t mind spending a bit of money. You could always just use a crate from Bunnings, you’d want to drill some holes in the bottom so water won’t end up trapped inside but it shouldn’t be too hard to cable tie some rod holders onto the sides.

Tackle will get wet on a kayak, I’d be more inclined to ditch the tackle bag and put stuff in water tight boxes or Tupperware containers.

Oh yes, Bunnings has plastic crates I can play around with. Just need one with a lid and zip ties. Maybe legs or something to lift the bottom, so wont get soaked if water got in. Will be a nice little project.

Eskys are always good value...and waterproof. Put some hinges on one end to have it open lengthwise.

Ive got a waterproof toolbox, similar to this one - https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Waterpro ... Y4TOU?th=1 , works a treat especially with the trays. Aim for a light one though as they'll sink pretty quick if they go overboard and aren't secured
Wilderness systems make specialised kayak crates with rod holders and insulated catch bags which fit perfectly in the back of a yak but they're bloody expensive. DIY always works too as hornet said

Oh true, didn't think of toolbox! Another reason to go to Bunnings and look around.

I've seen few with these and you can attatch pvc rod holder's to it easily. Just an idea, goodluck mate :thumbsup:

Edit" this was just a pic of it, I'm not suggesting to get it for this price lol , look at delivery cost haha. I have seen exact thing at cosco for about $50 if you want to sus it out. It's air tight and opens with one spin of the lid hatch thing.
