Opinion on two reels please

Post by hornet » Sun Mar 08, 2020 2:01 am

Ok guys which reel would you choose between the daiwa or shimano for surf work with a mixture of bait and lure.

I just purchased a Penn Allegiance II Surf 10FT 10-15KG 2PC Fishing Rod ~ I will be using 25lb mono.

https://www.shimanofish.com.au/content/ ... EXXSB.html $128
OR
https://daiwafishing.com.au/products/aird-5500 $139

This is the dark horse a friend suggested ? = https://www.dinga.com.au/rovex-8000-big ... -reel.html

I'm after distance here. my budget is $150

or have I missed other reel candidates under $150?

Thx !

not sure about those two reels, I bet they'd be ok though.
the rovex big boss look like good value.
also fin-nor lethal seem good value as well, I just picked one up in size 80 for just under $100 I think I was.

That Rovex has 18kg drag...you'd be able to wind in some huge bits of seaweed with that puppy

Those allegience's are great rods. I still have one and use it quite often. Probably the best value for money rod i've bought, i've landed 10cm squid and metre long kingfish on mine.

If you're budget is $180ish for a reel i'd suggest trying to get your hands on one of the older stradics ci4's if you're spinning, the newer FK model is good too, you might pick up a second hand one for that money. or a lethal 80/100 if bait fishing.

That rod is bulletproof and needs a bulletproof reel to match.

edit :- anything over about 5kg of drag is completely wasted.

I would give the FL's a big miss, already know of some of them giving up very early in their life.

Edit: to shimano's credit they were fixed up under warranty but I still wouldn't go there

Edit 2: Tired and got my codes wrong I'm talking about FL's would also skip FK's though, much prefer the older FJ I have. Know of lots of FK's that have had issues

That's because I got my codes wrong, everywhere should be clearing fk's now or soon as they are an old model. I was speaking of the new FL model but I still wouldn't get an FK either had one for a bit and had issues with the main gear in under a year and know of others with similar problems

I ended up using a Penn slammer 5600 live liner, it seemed to have the extra drag for fighting huge seaweed on the beaches, It also has a no flex metal housing when reeling in troublesome surfers ... I may even catch a fish one day.
