Re: UL Reel and line tangle problems!
Strip about 50 yards of line off reel - Anchor end of line to a fixed point and go for a walk with bail arm open to release line, stop, then remove line from fixed point, then reel line back onto reel applying tension by running through fingers ( thumb and pointer finger ) - fingers near first runner on rod. Allows line to untwist as well as loading onto reel evenly, remain stationary while winding line back onto reel.

Watch this from Daiwa, very well explained and short.

Re: UL Reel and line tangle problems!
Thanks Seb, I started doing that but had trouble the other night - too dark to see the little lure land!
I think I'll take the tip from everyone to strip some line off and respool it, and keep an eye on the slack when casting from now on. Cheers all!

Re: UL Reel and line tangle problems!
Every now and then, do the hand hold thing. When windy, do it almost all the time.
So cast the lure out, close the bail arm, then hold the line just after the spool, and wind. Just to recreate the tension, instead of winding a slack line. When it gets enough tension, the do normal lure retrieve.
Works for me. And try casting with the wind, helps a lot. Side wind is bad.

Re: UL Reel and line tangle problems!
Well, I was keen for a fish yesterday and didn't have much time, so I headed out with my twisty line.
Ended up with a great big birds nest of course! Decided to snap it off and realised I've done that so many times that I've run out of line pretty much. Still, enough for a long cast. Hooked the monster below.
He is a solid 6cm long I reckon.
When I got back, I spooled up the remaining 100m or so of line I have, under better tension this time, so hoping that will keep me out of trouble (at least until I can find some braid).
Cheers!

Great that you had some success and as far as it being a "Monster", well , , , , a little "re-do" of the photo can easily fix that
Some of those Coles "mini" things might be worth having in your Tackle Bag for "enhancing" fish sizes in photos
Cheers, Bugs

Re: UL Reel and line tangle problems!
Too funny mate. You are right... if I wasn't against wasteful plastic I would keep a bag full of 'em! That said... maybe a mini beer can is acceptable.
Not a bad trip overall. My friend from Middleton drove over and someone left a butternut squash and two onions on the back of his ute in the shape of a... meat and two veg. No idea who it was, we think maybe a local mistook him for someone else. But a $5 pumpkin and free soup ain't a bad night on the water!!
I knew he was a tiddler though. Fishing on 3lb linen with a 1g jighead and could barely feel him on there. That said, first flatty on a plastic so that's an exciting new target for me.
