First time having a Graphite rod / Questions

Post by MrTedz » Fri Jun 03, 2022 10:28 am

Rod: Pen Prevail II 8-15KG 10ft 30lb braid 3oz weight

1. When pumping/fight the fish, don't go past 45 degrees up?

2. Can casting too hard break the rod? (yes I'm within the casting weight)

3. always pull or cut snags?

4. Any other tips or knowledge i should know? I already know about high sticking when grabbing higher parts

I drew an angle example at the beach on the attached photo.

One retrieve technique to prevent rod breakage - instead of angling up, bring the rod closer to you (while angling but to a much lesser degree).
Distance the rod from you when wind in and repeat. Not sure if this would work for heavy outfits with large fish at the end.

Agreed make sure the rod angles are ok with the line angle.

Be careful not to crack/damage the blank could create breaking points under pressure…

1. Try not to do this. Can break the tip section.

.
2. Yes and no. With the right technique, should be okay. There are other factors that can go wrong, and casting hard is like the nail onto the coffin.

3. Pull by the line if possible, otherwise, straighten the rod, hold the reel spool, and pull straight (not bending ghe rod).

4. If you need some power to pull, e.g. while fighting a fish, fight sideways rather than vertical high stick, lower the angle and using more of the butt of the rod. Also I tend to use less drag, because graphite rods nowadays are mostly very fast rod (stiff) that gives plenty of resistance and tension to the line, etc.
Store it properly, especially during travels (in the car, etc). Might get knocked without you knowing jor visible, then cracking when casting.

You'll struggle to break that rod even with horrific technique and treatment. The high sticking is far easier to achieve in a boat with a big fish underneath you and too much rod angle. On land the angle is severely reduced. I'd say even the 90 degree angle you've drawn would be fine assuming the fish is in the water. I wouldn't drag one up the beach like that.
