Loop for paternoster rig.

Post by Rod Bender » Sat Oct 03, 2015 5:02 pm

Hi peoples
Have had problems with my paternoster rigs...as in the loop pulls out and ends up with the hook being held in position on the mainline...with no loop! And the line (mono) is crimped/weakened whatever where it has been pulled through. I have a feeling it may occur if any force is exerted on the line...from below. This happens when the sinker gets snagged as opposed to the hooks. The loop I use is illustrated below. Very simple and I doubt if I am doing it wrong. Anyone else use this loop and have any problems. Or does anyone know of a better loop to tie. I'm not a fan of the twisted dropper loop as too me it may make the line more visible in its twisted form...just my thoughts. Always fishing in fresh water if it matters and usually light mono.
Thanks in advance.
Jim

it sounds like its not being tightened propperly, i used to have the same problem.

I find getting a bit of spit on the knot helps it tighten properly

Jim, this a regulation Dropper Loop and the only way I can see in getting your problem is that the knot is n,t tightened properly when the loop is formed. I think the secret with this knot is that the loop MUST be anchored to something and held as you draw the ends in. Difficult to explain but picture hanging the loop over say, a door knob and pulling down to tighten while the whole knot is under tension , not pulling up too quickly.
Once it,s all snugged down you can work on pulling really tight.
Maybe not best explanation but hope it helps.

I've started using three way swivels after having several break offs at the knot using dropped loops.

Been using that style of dropper for years for all my paternoster rigs (tagless dropper loop) I even snip the loop to get a single piece of line. Never had one let go on me.

The trick to tightening it full I've found is to do your wraps. Poke the loop through. Hold both ends of the line in your hands and hook the loop with your tongue. Draw it 3/4 of the way through the. Get the knot well wet with saliva before pulling it completely tight.

Never had an issue with that loop but another option is to tie your dropper with a surgeons knot.

Looks like it may be operator error! Thanks for the replies, Doug, I want to avoid adding additional hardware, Wokkster, I will check your option out as well but i'm guessing the 'not tightening it properly' suggestions may be on the mark!
cheers

Wokka, I use that knot for my sinker at the bottom of the rig but I've don't like the way it makes the mainline sit when used for the dropper loops.

Jim. At point 2 give it 1 extra turn in that knot before doing the wraps for the loop.
