Spinner Bait Collars Disintegrating - Seeking Advice
Spinner Bait Collars Disintegrating - Seeking Advice
Hey guys,
Im wondering if anyone else has encountered this - and how did you fix this problem. My spinnerbaits seem to have their collars ‘disintegrate’.
I know about not storing different plastics together due to chemical makeup potentially interacting with one another - like the zmans. …But this is something different. The rubber collars holding the skirts together are the problem. I have both black and (what were) clear ones doing the exact same thing. I had them stored in zip-lock bags so they wouldn't tangle with one another.
Does anyone know whats causing this? And how do i fix / repair them?
Thanks in advance for any advice or insight.

Yeah you're right it sound more like the rubber is breaking down rather than the interaction between the plastics.
They say with rubber store them in an air tight, dry, dark place - otherwise they end up cracking and becoming brittle.
I'd say replace them with maybe some fishing line, aluminium wire?

How old are they?
Some rubber doesn't last. They can dry, melt, or simply breaks. You can buy replacements

They’ve been in the ziplock bags inside a black tacklebox for 2 seasons id say. Since my youngest son was born, the spinnerbaits have not seen the water.
Could the plastic if the ziplock bags be the issue?

Thanks Andrews, the wire sounds appealing - am a bit worried about cutting and destroying the shirts though. The rubber has some flex that i think would be a bit forgiving in not cutting through the skirt rubber.
There must be a reason why they build them with rubber and not wire… ?

I've had a few where that has happened. Imo if the collar is sticky or tacky it is likely a chemical thing from something it was stored with, in your case the bag and if it is dry or crumbly its more of an age issue.
For repairing them look into fly tying thread or even thicker braid. Should be able to bind them onto the hook there, add a dob of glue and keep fishing them. Pretty sure they use the rubber because it is cheaper and easier than tying them on properly

Thanks mazman. It’s definitely a chemical thing. I might try wire first - though resort to fly tying if needed.
