Bait presentation

Post by eddyt » Sat Oct 05, 2019 12:11 pm

I've always wondered what is the best way to rig up a live, small tommy rough targeting snapper in PPB. I usually put a 4/0 circle through the back just behind the head but all that ever happens is the rod will buckle hard but no hookup. Sometimes the tommy will just get eaten with no obvious hit.

I've tried cutting it in half too where I will pin the hook through twice for the tail but hook up rate is bad.

What's your best way of using live tommy rough as bait?

I've heard that snapper attack from the head first, so the presentation i'd go for is the hook through the bottom and top lip, like this:

I've seen it done on a few youtube vids where they are fishing livies for snapper and it looks to be pretty successful.

Usually when I fish for snapper or pinkies with dead bait (usually a pillie, haven't tried tommies or sand whiting) I use this rig:

bottom hook goes out one side of the bait through the gill plate and the other goes out the side around the anal fin, gets a good hook exposure.

I think you should tie a running hook for better hook up, when you using tight drag

Been doing this since last year, haven't caught any good snapper yet like this. I've tried hooking through the lips before too, but i find it gets eaten too often without the rod going off

One of the best bait rigging videos I've come across is Matt from New Zealands Ultimate Fishing channel on you tube. Highly recommended for a range of whole baits and presentation.

Yup I use the same rig.

For live baiting, yeah either on the nose or dorsal fin.
