Opened the account with a bang! 26/10/2021

Post by Lightningx » Thu Oct 28, 2021 9:52 am

With beautiful weather forecast for Tuesday, me and my mate headed out for our first proper big red session.
The plan was to look for a few squid first just to add to our variety of baits.
We launched quite late from st kilda around 10:30 and went to a couple of our usual squid spots but the water was too murky! We drove down a bit further but still no luck with any clear water. We still gave it a go for around an hour but no luck, so decided to head out deep in the hunt for a red or 2.

On the way to our first spot I sounded around but didn’t see anything worth stopping for.
By around 12:30 we were anchored in our spot out in 17 metres.
Dropped a burley bomb down and put out a spread of baits.
One with the freshly caught salmon I got not that long ago with the missus, a whole port Phillip bay pillie, another with a whole Californian squid and another with a whole silver whiting.
I have caught some nice flatties in the past in this spot so put out one small rod for the flatties as well.
Wasn’t long and the small rod started getting bites and some nice flatties came on board. Then for the next half hour or so, caught a banjo, a small gummy and a port Jackson.
Then around 1:10 I saw one of the big rods get a bite but then it slowly started loading up, I waited a bit and then zzzzzzzzz it started taking off! Woooooohooooooo
Quickly grabbed the rod and I was on! It reminded me of the 5.5 kilo one I caught last year in the exact same spot. Felt very similar weight wise. The fight was very good multiple runs and dives until it was in the net and in the boat. What a cracker! One look at it and my mate called it at 6-6.5 kilos. What a ripper to open the account for the new season! We were very happy. It measured 79.5 Cm and like I said very fat!
Put it in the kill tank and re baited and cast again. About 10 minutes later we had another run but this time half way through the fight the fish came off!!!
We stayed here for about another hour or so but not much apart from some more flatties so we pulled up the anchor and headed to another spot. Stayed here for a couple of hours but no big snaps, just a bunch of unwanted species so we called it a day.

Ended the day with just the one big fish and 10 flatties.
I forgot to take photos of the flatties.
Great way to start the season! We are pumped to head out again next week. Might even go on Sunday as the weather is looking great.

Cheers,
