This time we launched around 2pm and went to look for some fresh squid first. Once again the water was quite murky! We tried a couple of spots we usually get a few but had no luck again.
We had plenty of fresh Ppb pillies and salmon and silver whtings so decided to head out to our first spot in the deep.
Got there and anchored and put out a spread of baits.
The wind started picking up and started becoming quite choppy!
They always get the wind wrong! It was meant to be quite calm a nice light southeast but instead it was up around the high 20s south gusts in the low 30s.
Anyway I picked up a few flatties and a few banjos and that was about it and we just weren’t feeling it in that spot so we made a move a bit shallower.
The next spot wasn’t much better with a few unwanted species and too many undersize pinkies so we pulled the pin and went in even shallower.
By this time it was getting late in the afternoon.
We dropped the anchor in 11 metres and setup 4 rods with a variety of baits and dropped the burley cage down and sat back.
I got a tentative bite on one of the rods and went to check it and took it out of the rod holder and struck when I felt a good bite and I was on! It started peeling some line but not long into the fight it just didn’t feel like a red. Not a dead weight like a banjo either so I wasn’t sure what it was. As I was reeling in it took a leap out of the water. My mate thought it was a small kingie. As it got close to the boat it kept doing circles underneath the boat.
Turns out it was a good size salmon
After that I got onto some more flatties.
At around 6pm as I was looking at the rods one of them had a bite and then like the other day it started loading up and Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
The reel started screaming! Woooooooohooooooo I quickly grabbed the rod and was on! Pretty sure it was a red this time!!!
After multiple runs my mate netted it. A quick measure and it was 71 Cm. Looked around a 4-4.5 kilo fish. Put it in the kill tank and put out another fresh bait.
The snapper took a whole Ppb pillie on a double 5/0 hook rig.
After that some more flatties came on board.
We started feeling hungry so my mate got dinner organised.
By this time the wind had dropped a bit and turned into a beautiful evening. He heated up some special fried rice.
As we were eating one of the rods went off again
always when eating these things happen lol The fish only measured 55 Cm but fought well for the size. Probably around a 2 kg fish.
Not long after that we called it a day and headed back to the marina.
In the end we ended up with a couple of nice snappers, 19 flatties and a big salmon. Great day!
With the weather looking good for Friday we might be going again!
